One thousand years before the world came to know as the West, at the fall of the Roman Empire in A.D. 410, a tribe in the German region made its way into modern Day Great Britain and began to speak its own Anglo-Saxon language subsequently evolving into the modern day English language.
In the East, at the zenith of the Khmer empire, the Khmer people who controlled much of modern day Southeast Asia developed the largest cities, schools, roads, water ways, and a most advanced civilization of its time in the world.
Home to the largest man-made peace monument ( Angkor Wat ) and oldest evidence of the origin of the number zero, modern day Cambodia was the epicenter for human, language, and development of the arts.
Often dubbed as the Language of Heaven on Earth, the Khmer language evolved over the centuries as evidenced in the inscriptions on thousands of monuments throughout modern day SE Asia. Through war, disease, famine, disasters, and domestic politics, a once rich and proud language of the Khmer people has become lost leaving thousands of years of humanity misunderstood and misinterpreted.
The Learn Khmer Online ( LKO) project is a collaborative effort of organizations and individuals with a common mission to revive the Khmer language.
The origin of the English language began at the fall of the Roman Empire much as that of the Khmer language during the Khmer empire. Learn Khmer Online is a free website accessible to the global community. A proud project of the IKARE and National Khmer Legacy Museum and a collaborative effort of the hearts of the Khemerak people ( Khmer people ) we continuously strive to improve tools and administrative services by consistently upgrading our learning interfaces and tools. One of the strategies of the Learn Khmer Online project is to enhance activities for internationalization. Our main objectives include strengthening the relations of academic cooperation with international institutions concerned with higher education specifically for Cambodians; enhancing operations & projects funding from international organizations; increasing both number and proportion of international users both online and offline; encouraging the education department, Donors and NGO organizations incorporate a Learn Khmer Online school/office across platforms; developing reach to improve awareness and recruitment/volunteers locally & internationally; and encouraging inclusion with international projects such as IKARE, and other Non-Profit organizations.
Within the framework of this project, a mindful set of tools has been created for tutorial convenience. With a main office in Cambodia to oversee the Learn Khmer Online development projects and timelines are routinely monitored for inefficiencies and improvements.
Now that we’ve captured your attention about the Khmer language, we hope to interest you to continue learning and supporting this highly ambitious project. We hope you will share your learning experience with your friends and loved ones while updating us with feedback on how we can better serve you in the future.
Thank you very much. May God bless you!
Developed with the Khmer and non-Khmer speaking population in mind, the LKO project aims to bring back the arts, culture, and traditions of the Khmer people to life. The genocide of the 1970s was but a time of grave destruction for the Khmer people. While its demise touched circa 1570 years after the fall of the Roman Empire, remnants of the Khmer people are alive and well today. It is with hope and love for the legacy of the Khmer people that we re-introduce this LKO platform to the world community to keep this wonder of human creation from going extinct; while also preserving the richness of a culture & traditions spanning much of modern day SE Asia. Language touches the hearts, minds, and spirits of humans through stories and evidences already preserved in temples across SE Asia.

My name is Yan Roeun and I am the founder of Learn Khmer Online Project. I currently live in Minnesota, USA and Learn Khmer Online has been my love and passion. It has been an “over 10 year’ journey of exhaustion for me striving to complete the project alone with little progress due to the lack of resource and financial difficulty. But I never gave up and with persistent commitment and effort I am able to network with the right people who have volunteered and money to support this effort. I believe Learn Khmer Online will make a positive difference in everyone’s life who wishes to learn Khmer language.
Learn Khmer Online will use innovative tools and methodologies that make it easier and more efficient to learn. It will provide learners with lucid and accurate pronunciation and dialect. My goal is to create the Learn Khmer Online project with the hope that everyone will take full advantage of this online forum to learn the language and pass on to the next generation.
Learn Khmer Online is a free website made accessible to all around the globe who wishes to learn the Khmer Language. This project is a project of the IKARE, a non-profit organization. Thank you again for your kindness and support.
Sincerely yours,
Yan Roeun
